The Buttolph Flyer Miniature Railway Group started in 2016 with a 5 inch gauge class 08 locomotive. `This is numbered 08097, 'The Buttolph Flyer' in memory of my great nan and grandad. We visited various different railway clubs in 2016-2017 and ran train trips to support their fund raising for local charities. We had an enjoyable time running trains at these different locations. We continued visiting other railways during 2018 and then in April, that year, we had an opportunity that we could not miss to buy our own railway. We announced on the 19th May that we planned to buy another railway called AJ Rail 5” Portable Railway. This railway had been raising money for charities around the York area where it was based. We decided on the price and purchased AJ Rail on the 25th of May. This included all of the locomotives, rolling stock and a portable track. We had our first big event on the 21st of July. We also did quite a few events at Eaton Park Railway on the 5” and 7 1/4 gauge track. Then in October we had our last event of the year. I had an old friend come to the railway and he was so amazed by it all. Dale Buttolph and Gavin now run the railway as a club where people can enjoy driving trains and running a miniature railway. We also had a busy year in 2019 laying a permanent track for the railway and ran many events. In 2020, a loop was installed to extend the running line. This means the total line is now 324 feet. This year we plan to install a traverser to enable more engines to be used on the line from the train shed. Plus, more signalling will be installed to operate the railway.
